How can I create a new food?

Find out how you can create a new food in balantia

If you can't find a food in the balantia database, you can create it yourself by entering its nutritional information.

Adding a food manually

On the “Log” screen, tap the + button next to a meal to open the food search screen.

Then select “Create New” → “New Food” to enter the nutritional information manually. If you've already typed the food's name in the search bar, it will automatically appear in the form.

Enter the food's details:

  • Food name and, optionally, a photo.

  • Serving unit and weight to define how the food is measured and how much one serving weighs.

  • Nutritional information, including energy, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, sugars, fiber, and protein. Required fields are marked in the form.

You can also add more details, such as salt, different types of fat, vitamins, minerals, and trace elements, by expanding the corresponding sections.

If you're using a nutrition label from a US product, you can enable “US Nutrition Label” to adjust the form to the corresponding label format.

When you're done, tap “Save”. Your new food will be saved under “My Foods”, where you can add it to your meals again, edit it, or delete it whenever you like.

Build Your Own

Under “Create New”, you can also select “Build Your Own” to create a meal or drink using your preferred ingredients and quantities.

For example, you can create your own sandwich, burger, souvlaki, pizza, salad, omelet, or coffee. balantia automatically calculates its total nutritional value, and if you choose to save it, you'll find it under “My Foods” to use again.

Other ways to log food

If you don't want to enter nutritional information manually, you can use:

  • Barcode scanning: Scan the barcode of a packaged product to quickly search for it.

  • AI photo logging: Take a photo of your meal or a product's nutrition label and let AI identify the foods and their nutritional information.

  • Voice logging: Simply say what you ate and let the app do the logging.

Foods created through photo or voice logging are also saved under “My Foods”, so you can easily use them again.
