How does food search work?

Food search

Food search in balantia helps you easily find foods and products using the app's food database, your previous entries, and smart nutrition filters.

How to search for a food

On the “Log” screen, tap the + button next to the meal you want to add food to.

On the “Food Search” screen, type the name of a food (e.g., chicken or rice) or a product name and brand. Results appear as you type.

Recent, favorite, and saved foods

Without typing anything, you can quickly access foods and meals you've used before:

  • Recent: Foods you've logged recently. Just below this list, you'll also find “Frequent”, making it easy to access foods you eat most often.

  • My Meals: Meals you've saved to log again.

  • My Foods: Foods you've created yourself, either manually or using the app's available features.

  • Favorites: Foods you've added to your favorites.

By tapping the “Food Search” field, you can also view your recent searches and remove them using “Clear”.

Smart nutrition filters

You can use smart nutrition filters to narrow your search results based on your needs:

  • High Protein: Find foods that are high in protein.

  • Low Fat: Find foods that are low in fat.

  • Verified: Show only foods and branded products with verified nutritional data from the balantia database.

  • My Foods: Show only foods you've created.

  • Favorites: Show only foods you've added to your favorites.

How search results are organized

Search results are grouped into different categories to help you find what you're looking for:

  • Build Your Own: Appears at the top of the results when a matching option is available. You can create your own meal or drink using your preferred ingredients.

  • Generic Foods: Foods from the balantia database, with nutritional information curated by experts.

  • Branded Foods: Packaged products from both balantia's curated database and Open Food Facts.
